How to Find External Hard Drive in Windows 10
Hi Kristina,
Below are some troubleshooting steps that will fix the normal issues with external hard disks.
Method 1: Run the hardware troubleshooter and check if it helps.
-
Press Windows and X key together and select Control Panel.
-
Click on Troubleshooting.
-
Click on View all option on the left side of the Windows.
-
Click on Hardware and Devices option.
-
Click on Next and follow the onscreen instructions to troubleshoot the issue.
Method 2: Try connecting the external hard drive to a different USB port and check.
Method 3: Let's check the disk management and see if the hard drive is detected. If it is detected, change the drive letter and go back to the Windows Explorer and check if you can open it.
-
Open Disk Manager by pressing Windows key + R, in the run prompt type diskmgmt.msc, hit Enter key, it will open the disk management that will list all the disks that are connected to the computer.
-
Check if you can see the USB drive. If it is listed.
-
Right-click the drive, and then click Change, click Assign the following drive letter, click the letter that you want to use, and then click OK.
Please post here with the status of the issue and we will be glad to assist you further.

Hello,
I am having the same issue & the above steps did not work for me. In Disk Management my Mac formatted drive shows as a "Healthy Primary Partition" but when I try to assign it a letter/path those commands are greyed out. The only commands I have available when I select that partition is "delete volume..." and 'help'.

Hello,
My seagate Mac Slim is also not recognized after the big update... It was already not recognized when I bought the pc but I fixed it with eventually by disabling your useless OneDrive function.
Now it's back again thanks to your stupid update. I lost a lot of time on it. Now I try your diskmgmt solution but it give me and many others this error. Refreshing doesn't help.
Please give us a solution that can fix the problem.

Method 3 worked for me. I installed printer/scanner software for my old Dell all-in-one printer and then I could not find my portable hard drive in the File Explorer list. I had an error in Device Manager showing that the driver was missing for the "Base System Device" and I assumed that was the problem. I will have to run my backup program to find out if everything is working properly.
